2007 onwards: Coventry Aquatics

One of the largest aquatics shops in the Midlands needed a new website to coincide with the launch of their new store. But they wanted something apart from the usual commercial "store website": they wanted something that reflects their involvement in the community as well.

I am working closely with them to shape and maintain their online presence and evolve the website over time to allow shoppers to buy online.

2006 onwards: Mathematics Research Centre (MRC)

The MRC runs a busy programme of research activities in the Warwick Mathematics Institute, bringing academics from all over the world to the department for workshops and yearly symposia. They needed a database system with an online registration facility to help them organise their work.

July 2006: www.indecon.org - the Network of Industrial Economists

This website came about through word-of-mouth recommendation from an earlier project, and offers a simple web-presence for the activities of an academic grouping. The client wanted to be able to update the website easily himself, so I incorporated a powerful content management system into the project.

"...intuitive ease of use was a significant priority that Steve Thomas was able to fulfil swiftly with the site he developed for us"

Professor Michael Waterson, Chairman, NIE

Spring/Summer 2006: Political Publishing

A major project involving a public e-commerce site and private administrative sections to enable this new online publishing business to operate.

June 2006 onwards: Royal Economic Society conferences

Ongoing work developing a website for the Royal Economic Society’s annual conference programme.

"Steve is clearly not only technically gifted, but his excellent communication skills and his talent for thinking ahead and being proactive in suggesting possible ways forward mean that he stands out as an exceptional practitioner in this area..."

Professor Robin Naylor, Royal Economic Society Conference Secretary

2005 onwards: Mathematics Institute

Development of two database systems for another department at the University of Warwick, one to manage student records and another to collect and process end-of-year examination results.

The systems utilise a MS Access front end for administrative staff, with a MySQL database back end and a web-based area for academic staff and student access. Security and integration with existing systems (through synchronisation with central university databases and the use of the university's single sign-on) were crucial elements of the project.

"not only produced a technical solution which we are very happy with, but has also played a crucial role in convincing the staff who use it to feel secure ownership of the new system..."

Professor Colin Sparrow, Head of Department

Autumn 2005: tribal-edge.co.uk

A community website for users of a popular MMORPG (now offline).

2004/5: my.economics

Developed two systems for the Department of Economics at the University of Warwick to support the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes. Both systems incorporate a web-based interface for staff and students, a MS Access interface for administration and a student records database. I worked with the department over a long period, continuing to build on and develop the systems after the initial release and helping develop management strategies to make full use of their potential.
